Absa KKNK welcomes proposals for 2013
2012-07-17

There are two weeks left to submit proposals for the 19th Absa KKNK in Oudtshoorn.

Production houses, artists and other arts practitioners are reminded to submit proposals for the festival from 29 March – 6 April 2013. The closing date for proposals is Tuesday, July 31, 2012. Proposal forms are available on the Absa KKNK website, www.absakknk.co.za, or per e-mail from program@kknk.co.za, or on request from 044 203 8600.

This year, a few new additions are included in the process, according to Programme Manager, Theo Kemp. “One of the new projects for next year is to create a production that will involve residents from Greater Oudtshoorn, in a workshop format, to perform with professional artists and be part of the manufacturing process. There are no restrictions regarding the genre, therefore the production does not have to be a traditional theatre piece, but possibly a mixture of drama, music, visual arts and dance”, says Kemp.

The Absa KKNK also wants to encourage theatre makers to create theatre pieces focused on the youth market. “This market is a priority focus group of the festival for which we want to present exciting and entertaining theatre. Although we refer to ‘theatre’, it can also include a mix of art forms – for example music theatre and / or elements of dance theatre.” says Kemp. With youth theatre, the possibility also exists to present performance opportunities for young people, but the priority remains the delivery of quality work for a younger audience.

Furthermore, the Absa KKNK is looking for various curators. “In the first instance we are looking for a Classical Music curator to compile the classical music component of both the Absa KKNK and Klein Karoo Klassique (that takes place in Oudtshoorn in August each year). The scope of the programme for classical music at the Absa KKNK is smaller than at Klein Karoo Klassique, but both the programmes must maintain a good balance between main stream recitals and recitals for the connoisseur,” says Kemp. Other curators include a curator for both street and children theatre.

An exciting competition, offered to visual artists by the Absa KKNK this year, provides the chance to win a contract to create the sought after Kanna-awards statuettes. More information and guidelines are available on www.absakknk.co.za.
